Mary Torpey started as assistant director of Freelance Players’ Brookline Troupe in 2003 and is now the director of both the Needham and Dover Troupes. According to Mary, “The plays are the heart and soul of Freelance Players—both the older classics and the new! Some of my favorites are Monopoly, Clam’s Casino, America’s Next Top Monster, and the brand-new Shakespeare’s Daughters.

When asked about favorite moments with Freelance Players, Mary shared: “My favorite moments are always seeing how the kids blossom and grow as artists and community members within our environment. Most recently, a group of 6th grade Troupers who had finished their last show with us planned a performance for the staff, in which they sang through songs from all of the past shows they had been in. They planned it all on their own. It was a really beautiful and moving moment!”

As a mother of three boys, Mary sees how challenging the world can be— especially for children to grow up in. “Freelance Players,” Mary shares, “is a place where kids from all walks of life can come together in a nurturing and creative environment. They are celebrated for exactly who they are and the individual gifts they have to offer, all while experiencing the community process of putting on a play. There is nothing more valuable to a child than knowing that they are seen, heard, and loved simply for being themselves.”

Mary earned her BA in Theater and Drama from Indiana University and studied movement, voice, and acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts. Originally from Freeport, Maine, Mary now lives in Medfield with her family.
